One of "those" days

Today was a glorious day, at least weather-wise; mid 70's, sapphire-blue sky, cool breeze with that "fall snap" to it. It was one of "those" perfect fall days that I'd order up any time. It was also one of "those"days that makes me smile; my boy had a good day at school, and he brought me a pretty flower that he picked on a walk with his dad this afternoon. And then, it was one of "those" days that leaves me thanking God for His mercies and protection. As I was driving to afternoon carline (after waking up from what was supposed to be a 30-minute nap that stretched to 2 hours and left me running behind), a deer darted across the road, RIGHT in front of my van. I could practically count the hairs on her muscular body, and if she had waited just a second or two before taking off, I couldn't have avoided her. As it was, I hit my brakes, and she flattened her ears, stretched her neck, and managed to bound, unscathed, into the woods on the other side.
Oh, and it was one of "those" days when I just had to laugh at myself. I worked in the reading room at Adam's school this morning, one of my favorite volunteer activites. I LOVE Mrs. Britt, the "library lady" who carefully tends and grooms the K4-2nd grade students to prepare them for the big media center. I really love the class that's in there with me this year, too; 16 sweet K5 children who try SO hard to sit still and listen, even when it's obvious that the "wiggle bugs" are eating them up. I sit at the computer and check in all the books they've returned and then make a list of anyone who didn't bring their books back and therefore cannot check out any new ones. Once Mrs. Britt has finished reading the story of the day, she then helps them pick out their books, and I scan their selections to their account. Today, I had finished scanning their returns and was putting them on a rolling cart for shelving. I was in the rolling chair, and I was TRYING to be as quiet as possible, so as not to interrupt Mrs. Britt's story. So, instead of walking from the chair to the cart, I leaned forward to try and slip the books on the bottom shelf. And that's when it all went wrong; the cart rolled a little away from me, and as I streeetched forward to stop it, the chair rolled backwards. Out from under me, entirely. I hit the ground with a thump, and the chair turned over with a crash, and 16 little faces were suddenly riveted on "Mrs. Pam" instead of Ms. Britt. I have to give Ms. Britt credit; she entirely contained the guffaw that bubbled right at the surface and somehow refrained from any comments about grace, or my lack of it. She quickly got the class focused back on her book, and if there's one thing for which I'm thankful, it's that 5 year olds have a short memory. By the time they left, they were comparing the books they chose and talking about what they brought for snack. It could have been a lot worse; it COULD have been Adam's class, and he would have been marked for his remaining school years as "son of the klutz". As it is, I have a slightly bruised tailbone to match my slightly battered ego, and a whole new appreciation for the laws of physics. Along with a thankful heart for the blessings that far outweighed an embarrassing moment!
