Happy New Year!

Well, we set off about $70 in fireworks last night; kept waiting for blue lights to head down the driveway, but I keep forgetting that fireworks are now legal in Georgia. Kayla, Lindsey, and Diana came over for the last hour (yes, it took well over an hour to set them all off, including a few "rain breaks"). Today is beautiful, with deep blue skies and a cool breeze. I got up and cooked black-eyed peas, collard greens, and cornbread, to be eaten with a Honeybaked ham I picked up yesterday.
Adam and Chuck made an interesting discovery in the woods on Saturday, across the creek and right behind the house. They found the remains of a deer; a large male. All that was left was his head, still attached to his spine. There were a couple of broken ribs, but no other bones or meat. There were patches of fur all around, and it looked like there had been a real melee... scratch marks in the ground and leaves pushed back. I'm thinking coyotes, but I'm not sure. It really hit Adam at bedtime; he started talking about having nightmares, and got up later in tears. "Do you think the deer ever watched me while I played, Mom? Do you think I ever watched him from the window?" It made me sad, and also made me wonder if he truly would be able to hunt and shoot a deer. He talks about it, since Todd next door goes hunting a lot. I think it would tear him up to actually shoot one and then see it lying there.
Time to sign off... need to take a plate of food over to Mr. Doughty, so he can have some "good luck" for the new year. Blessings on us all.....
