My worst nightmare

Haven't seen one of these close to the house in 8 years. Today, the girl next door spotted this one coiled up on the driveway. She yelled to BugHunter, and he knew exactly what it was. They got me, and I watched it slide into the ivy. Nice. No sleep for me EVER til it was gone for good. The neighbor came over with his gun and we beat the bushes for quite a while but couldn't find it. He went home, and I sat the kids on the deck steps to watch for it with lemonade, snacks, and the phone so the girl could call daddy if they spotted Mr. Nightmare. Amazingly enough, they did, and dad came back, and he fired one perfect shot. Tonight, I can sleep, thanks to the very best neighbors in the whole wide world.
p.s. for anyone who doesn't know, THAT is a copperhead. I'm not scared of much in the animal kingdom, at least not around here, but that's one critter I just can't abide near my house.

Yuck, yuck, I am scared now. I hate those things, so glad your family is safe. I love you.

And you want us to come out and visit you??? I think I might need to wear cowgirl boots the whole time! Hip waders for Itty Bit...

Girl - I would have been FREAKING OUT. I have had NO good experiences with snakes. I mean, heck, they're those are the reason childbirth hurts, right?

(I know, I know).

Those pics are amazing (yes, the processing on #1 is WOW), but I'm just thankful y'all are safe!

And my work verification is "upwoo" - how funny is that?

"Upwoo" is hilarious, considering the fact that I was going UP as I said WOOOOOO when I first saw this snake! Rach... this is the first copperhead I've seen near the house since 2001; it must have something to do with the weather. AND, I'm convinced, with the fact that we saw NO king snakes anywhere in the yard this year; they are the BEST at keeping copperheads away. But I promise I'll find ways to keep y'all safe if you visit....

Don'tcha mean that WAS a copperhead?

They all look alike to me.

Ick.

I am lovin' Sue's short and concise comment. My sentiments exactly girl!

That's gonna be our inside joke now. Ya know... when we get to come and visit. we'll run up to eachother and shout UPWOO! UPWOO! and everybody else will just look at us like we're nuts.

Oh come on, don't tell me you're not used to that by now ;)

I have a funny story to tell about a black snake. But only funny cuz the deep deep hatred of snakes runs through my Irish blood and my grandmother wreaked vengeance for the labor pains of six children upon one black snake.

And KING snakes? You just *had* to go throw another kind of snake to be freaked out by in there.

And yes, I know there's a typo in my first comment. I'm OCD enough to want to delete it, but then your lovely comment banter would be thoroughly confusing.

ARGH! :)

(what? me ramblinlg?)

Well, I'm thinking no one would have really zoomed in on the typo until you shined a MEGAWATT light on it, but you know me.. I'm just sayin'. And don't you dare delete it.. typos are totally different from rude and ugly comments, and we all have fat fingers and brains sometimes. And upwoo? Yeah.. it'll be our inside joke, except that I'll forget it, and leave YOU standing there like a crazy lady.. "Huh? Whaaaa? I don't get it....." Ahhh.. menopause... the "pause" that refreshes... NOT!

We live in the woods and have copperheads too! They aren't this orange, some sort of hybrid version, but still poisonous. My husband gets out his hockey stick and whacks away!! I am cracking up at the thought of some city person around here shooting one. hee! That would never happen.

One morning I found my cat playing with what I thought was a stick... when I reached down to pick it up, it HISSED at me!! YIKES! It was a baby copperhead. Good thing we have a cat. I have another story of one being on the porch as all of my guests from a baby shower were leaving. I beat it to a pulp with a shovel. I think I scared my guests more than the giant snake. ha!!

Thank you, Mr. Daddy, for your good wishes. You are unusually kind! And I have to say one thing about your "kinder than normal" post: it ended up in my spam folder! C--racked me up this moring when we realized it; no so funy NOW when I have to help sell it! *siiiiiiigh......*

Pam,
Oh, please, take that picture AWAY...far, far away! I HATE snakes with a passion, especially poisonous ones like Copperheads! Keep your eyes peeled for those slimy critters!

Mom saw one yesterday stretched out on the road in Hermitage. I think since it has turned off cool (before time) around here they are moving onto the road to warm themselves up. But...a copperhead is not one I would want to run across either....

We get those A LOT at camp, and at the pond near our house, but we haven't had one near our house yet. We've had some kind of LONGGGG neon green whip-like snake that ran off and we never found it even though I had my handy shovel ready to cut off his head cuz I'm all cool like that....and we've had a rat snake, but that's it. We've had 2 tarantulas and that's enough to keep me up at night. YUCK YUCK YUCK!!!

I'll take care of your snakes when we all get together, just take care of my SPIDERS! EWW!

My word verification is PIGAZIDI, isn't that italian for Pork Lasagna? HAHAHAHAHAHA

That is absolutely frightening. After seeing those pictures and reading the story, all I could do was feel relief that we don't have those here. Then I checked the Internet to make sure.

Can you believe it? We do have those here! How in the world did I not know that? I've lived in Ohio for 33 years and never seen a Copperhead. I'm hoping that means they're very rare around here. :)

Uuuuuuuughghghgh! Those things (all snakes) give me the hee-bee-gee-bee's! I much prefer seeing them dead and gone than alive and cruising for trouble! Sounds like the day was mighty fun though. :) Again - great photography!
