Adam has crazy hair. It's thick, wavy, and has a slight reddish tint that I envy. But he also has a cowlick that makes it all go haywire once it grows out just a little bit. There are days when he celebrates the wildness and doesn't even want to comb it, and then there are days when he wants to buzz it all off. Yesterday was one of those days, and he said before he went to class that he wanted to "go bald" after school. As luck would have it, I was Facebook-chatting with my dear friend Amy, who is THE go-to girl for all things hair, and I mentioned that I would love to get some clippers and just mow it all off. Of course she offered to meet me at Sally's after school and use her pro discount card AND her expertise to help me get a good clipper set (don't ALL friends jump in like that? no?). And of course I said yes, because who can turn down THAT offer? So, when Adam got out of school, the first thing out of his mouth was "Do you have an appointment for me to get bald?" And then he had to pick his jaw up off of the ground when I said "Why, yes, I do!" We met sweet Amy and her adorable girls at Sally's and entered the world of d-i-y hair and nail improvement, and Amy promptly picked out the Wahl "Peanut" clippers for me. Small (looks like a cute l'il peanut, for real!) yet powerful, she informed me that hers had lasted for 15 years and was still going strong. So Adam, the "peanut" and I headed on our merry way home, ready to get it on (and take it off...).
The boy was a bit concerned about me wielding the clippers (I have no idea why... I told him that I used to clip my horse's bridle path, ears, and the hairs on his muzzle; is that not enough experienc?). But he settled into a chair on the deck, and I pinned the towel around his neck and turned on the "peanut". Here is his reaction:
Well, excuse me, Mr. GrumpyPants, but YOU'RE the one who wanted to go bald for tacky day at school. You better give me a smile! (I did not verbalize this; it was just going through my head as I mowed the first strip down the middle of his scalp). I had a mirror out there, and the King of Drama had this reaction when he saw the first cut:
It was a pretty significant chunk of hair that had fallen to the deck, I will concur. But really, it wasn't THAT bad, was it? I kept going (because really, what else COULD I do?) and finally ended up with this:
Boy, is that the look of a satisfied customer or what? I'm thinking of sticking a barber pole up by the mailbox; surely I have found my new calling! Or not. But, at least I HAVE found a way to keep his crazy hair in check without continually putting a dent in my wallet. One more haircut and that "peanut" will have paid for itself; it's all gravy after that. And after he got used to it, Adam even decided that he liked the look. Amy says she'll teach me how to trim up the nape and around his ears, but for Tacky Day, the "shabby shaved" look should work just fine. And who knows; I might even get frisky during the summer and start shaving designs in his hair. This was his response when I told him that I might consider it:
I just have to be careful and NEVER let him see a picture of Dennis Rodman...

LOL. I would say this is an instance of "be careful of what you wish for" really doesn't apply... he looks handsome as ever and somehow his eyes look even more amazing with a buzz haircut? How does that work???
Just beware of him deciding to try his own artistry with the Peanut!
haha what a fantastic hair cut :-) When Adam lets me cut his (which is rare) I dont do nearly as neat a job haha
great pictures too by the way - I love his new cut, he looks great!
He is just so cute. And you did a wonderful job! Holy WOW! It is a perfect cut! Did I ever tell you that Kaishon grows his hair long in the winter so he has a hat? Oh yes he does : ). And it doesn't other me at all. My sweet Mama thinks it is INSANE! Adam looks so cute : ) and SO grown up!
LOVE IT!!!
And he looks so cute like that....but honestly, he is not bald, does he know that? Caleb (grandson) wears his like this all the time. Lot cooler in the summer but looks nasty growing back. Enjoy, easier to wash too.
I am soooooooo relieved for Adam.
I thought that I was going to read that after that first swath you forgot where you were at in the process....
And he would have to have a reverse Mohawk....
lucky for you that boy could make even a bad haircut look good...:o)LOL
I think it looks great on him! I learned how to cut hair when in Africa years ago for Glenn, Chris and our Shih tzu dog but was so glad to get to America where they could go to Great Clips for $10 (well, not the dog.) Unfortunately, I'm back to cutting Glenn's hair here in order to save a few bucks and a lot of time.
Did you know that when volunteers come out to help us at our meetings with childcare and such, we always ask if there is a hairdresser among the crowd. Such a ministry!
lol, really cute.
you did a great job.
When Brian started shaving his head i insisted that we no pay an arm and a leg keeping it up-once or twice weekly!
It's pretty easy when you give it a try :
Fantastic hair cut! You really did very well here.
I like his attitude and his drama perosnality :)
