Update: btw... the hand holding HHD in the second and third pictures? Was mine. Just realized that! Yes, I DID hold the big, scary caterpillar.. anything for a good shot!
Wow! Bug Hunter's Hickory Horned Devil was so popular that it even won me a button for my sidebar (and believe me, it WILL be posted!). BH and HHD were Angie's pick for the I Heart Faces Pet edition this week... can you say "excited"? I think I may have cracked a window with my ear-splitting squeal when I read Carebear's comment, advising me that my pic was picked. And, since HHD was so popular, I figured I may as well post a few more pictures of it in it's glory..

and then, in it's pupa. That's for Sue G., who wants to pupate. Sue, I just don't think so, OK?
Honestly, HHD was one of the coolest things I think I have EVER seen. And, it made me really see my Bug Hunter as the blessing that he is. BBH (Before Bug Hunter), I was terrified of spiders, wasps and bees, and lots of other bugs. I would have totally freaked out if I'd seen a caterpillar that looked like that; but the truth is that I would have never, ever encountered it in the first place. How many of YOU have ever seen one, or even heard of it? But my boy opened my eyes to just how amazing bugs are; they are the most numerous life form created by God, and they all have a purpose. Each, in it's own way, is wonderfully and fearfully made; but BBH, I was blind to that fact. When I found out, at 39, that I was having a child-my FIRST child-I wasn't sure that God's plan was a good one. But, 10 years after that conception, I can now see at least a small corner of His plan, and it is good.
I'm so glad I posted the pic of the HHD; it was a winner in more ways than just being featured on my very favorite blog. It introduced YOU, my readers, to a new facet of God's amazing handiwork, and THAT makes it a winner in another and very special way. There were several other pictures that I considered going with; I wanted to post them, too. Because each of THEM came about as a direct result of Bug Hunter's passion for enjoying God's amazing creations. I hope you enjoy these pictures, too... now, GO... outside, every last one of you.. and don't come back in til you find something cool!

What exactly is the one before the frog??? It looks like a bug with a sweater vest on! VERY cool bugs!!
I don't have to go outside to find cool bugs...my boys are continuously bringing them INSIDE! UHG!!! I will never forget when I gave my son permission to bring in a bunch of freshly found bugs in order to get him into bed...they escaped in the night and we never did find some of them! (UGH again!)
After looking at your post about the HHD, I went searching to find out more about it. The most fascinating facts? After the HHD emerges as a Regal moth, it basically lays 250 or so eggs and dies. The reason it dies is because as a moth it has no mouth parts! What a fascinating creature! I am so glad Angie picked your picture. :)
Ahh.. I feel justified! Knowing that Drew actually was curious enough to search for more info makes it all worthwhile! Hoooray...
You never know. It could happen.
(By the way, love the other pix you posted. You certainly do get upclose and personal with these creatures. Amazing shots.)
