The games people play

Who likes to play games? No, not mind games.. nothing mean or ugly or underhanded. I mean board games, card games, and other "fun" activites with family and friends. I'm trying to get Bug Hunter back up to speed with his multiplication tables before school starts, and I don't blame him for balking at flash cards and speed drills during the summer. Yuck.. I'd hate that if I were him! So, we play "Math War". I made one-sided multiplication cards (most flash cards nowdays have a problem on each side and don't work well for card games), and I divide the deck evenly between us. We have our cards face down in front of us, and we each turn one over. We have to be able to call out the correct answer to our problem quickly, and whoever has the highest number wins the two cards. If we have the same number, it's just like "War"; we each lay down two of our face down cards and turn up the third. Whoever has the highest answer wins the whole pile. We can play endlessly, and Bug doesn't seem to mind having to come up with answers when it's fun.
There's another game that we love around here; it's a preschool game that really does go all the way to adult. Our buddy Tyler (it's almost been a year since he left us; be looking for a post on that soon..) LOVED this game so much that we played it every time he came over here. Bug and his dad played it today (and Bug whipped Dad.. you can either retain the info you need to do well in the game or you can't). It's called "Space Faces", and I give it two thumbs up (six, actually, because Bug and Dad love it, too. And if Tyler were here, I feel sure he'd contribute HIS thumbs, too). Here's a picture of it:

and here's a link to more info about it. So, what games do YOUR people play?

Never heard of that game, Pam! We love playing board games...the girls and I do, anyway! Pictionary is a favorite of ours! Of course, I can't even draw a stick figure, so it's a little challenging for me! :)

We play Guestures, Taboo, lots of word games, Pictionary, etc. My daughter and I play a card game called California something or other (no memory lapses for me, huh?) that we learned while visiting the local children's detention prison to minister to the inmates. I like anything that has to do with words, words, words.

My people? Let's see. If there were a game called Major Manipulation, we would win every time! Or how about a game called Guilt or Consequences. Perhaps one called Name that Doctor.

Mostly they play Mah Jong. Used to keep me up as a child listening to all the one-cracking and two-bamming...whatever that meant.

You asked. :-)

I love your creative math cards - you are such a cool mom! :) I am a HUGE Phase Ten fan....love it! And I also love UNO..but just recently learned about UNO Attack. A girl at the hospital introduced it to me while I was volunteering...you know, when I'm playing with the kids..I'm supposed to "be nice" but I'm telling you I was having so much fun with this one - do it totally too serious! :)

I love your ideas and hadn't heard of the space game before!! Always love finding new games!

We have a hard time playing board games right now with the Littlest one in the mix...he wants so badly to be involved; but tends to create chaos...

We have recently discovered "Who Knew?" and love it! I bought it before we left for vacation and we played it when it was cold and rainy!

We love games! I have never heard of Space Faces but will have to check it out.

Our favorite games, since the boys are little, include Shoots and Ladders, Candyland and Memory Match.

Just stumbled across your blog on The Blog Frog and this post caught my attention. For my daughter's 3rd birthday (today) I gave her "Heil Land"! It's a "Candy Land" game I made for her except it uses our family instead of colors and candy! She LOVED it! She loves other games too such as the "Goodnight Moon" game and "High Ho Cherrio" (did I spell that right?), but I think "Heil Land" takes the cake! Check out my blog for more details on the game if you want :)
